First off… to those in the Florida panhandle… stay safe and hopefully you have gotten out of there.

I wrote this in yesterday's blog...

The only point of concern for this team is… wait for it… discipline. Bad penalties at bad times haven’t bit this team hard yet, but it bears watching.

Consider this Nashville Predators team officially bit. A disappointing 3-0 loss in the home opener that featured two Calgary power play goals, decent if unspectacular start and a 43 shots on goal from the Preds. Oh… and Mike Smith channeling his performance from the 2012 playoffs… that too.

Plenty of unconverted chances was the story of the game. Missed nets, a bad bounce or two, shots to the crest, missed rebounds and some really, really good saves from a netminder that just seems to rise up when he sees the Preds logo.

Calgary’s defensive scheme was to stop the JoFA line… Viktor Arvidsson got hurt in the first period and missed almost a full period causing Peter Laviolette to juggle his lines and limited the impact of the Preds top line. The line of Kyle Turris, Kevin Fiala and Craig Smith were generating chances, but a lack of finish has hurt this line so far this season.

0-4 on the power play, bad giveaways at the wrong time leading to penalties… the list goes on, but, in the big picture, it’s one loss… and frankly… if the Predators get 4 out of every six points available to them, they will be in great shape come playoff time.

The Predators are back in action tomorrow night. It’s the first divisional game of the season for Nashville as the Winnipeg Jets hit town for the first time since last season’s epic 2nd round series. Very limited tickets remain…

Random Notes

- We had a great time on the Gold Walk last night, and the haters be damned… the banner raising was a lot of fun as well.

- The 365 Fund will be presenting a check to the Monroe Carell Jr. Children’s Hospital at Vanderbilt today. The fund has raised over half a million dollars for pediatric cancer research.

- The first Hockey Fights Cancer Night is scheduled for 11/3 at Bridgestone Arena.

- A Stanley Cup rematch tonight on Wednesday Night Hockey… Caps / VGK on NBCSN… should be a good one.
