Pittsburgh will have their hands full tonight. When you combine quality of teammate with natural ability Auston Matthews is probably the most dangerous player in the league right now. It would be Connor McDavid if he weren’t in hockey prison, but he is.

Tonight’s matchup is pretty great if you like skilled players. Both teams have the kind of players that attract people to the sport of hockey. Regardless of the game’s outcome I would be surprised if there weren’t quite a few moments that were a delight to watch.

Matt Murray will be making a return to the crease after sitting out some time due to a concussion. Casey DeSmith had earned a third consecutive start based on his play. It was nice to give Matt Murray some extra time off to heal. That said it is an awful matchup for him to make a return to. Toronto is the top scoring team in the league at 4.71 goals per game and even if Murray had his A game (which he certainly hasn’t) it would be an uphill battle.

If the referees call a lot of penalties prepare for some fireworks regardless of who they are called on. I consider Toronto and Pittsburgh to be on the top tier of power plays in the league along with Washington and San Jose. Mike Babcock finally wised up and loads up his top power play unit with Auston Matthews where as before he would try to evenly split the talent. Who would have thought having your best players on the top power play was a good idea? Apparently not the best coach in the world. It was dumb when the Penguins split up Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin and it was dumb when the Leafs did it with Auston Matthews.

Sidney Crosby has some of his new teammates spying on the Toronto Maple Leafs for him
