Break up the Buffalo Sabres!
The Sabres are 6-2-2 in the last 10 games. A far cry from being the 31st place team from the 2017-18 season.
The NHL's most-improved squad scored two goals late in the third period to rally for a 4-3 shootout win against the much-improved Vancouver Canucks.
On a days where Jack Eichel and Samson Reinhart suffered early first period injuries and didnt return until the second period, the Sabres overcame adversity and found a way to win a game that they were badly outplayed in.
They don't ask how. They ask how many, right?
The Canucks carried the play for most of the game and led 3-1 late in the third period when red hot sniper Jeff Skinner scored his NHL-leading 12th goal of the season. Skinner's clutch goal pumped up his Sabres teammates.
Losing 3-2 with 2:37 remaining in regulation, the Sabres dug down deep and found the solution. Vancouver, B.C. native Samson Reinhart brought Sabres fans to their feet when he scored a cardiac classic goal to make it 3-3 with 1:47 remaining in regulation.
On Thursday night against the Montreal Canadiens, Phil Housley's cardiac kids overcame a late deficit to tie the game in regulation then win it in overtime. Against the Habs, the Sabres lost four-one goal leads but never panicked. The Sabres have proven themselves to be a team that bends but doesn't break under the pressure of being a goal or two down on the scoreboard.
On Saturday afternoon, Reinhart's dagger erased the Canucks' two-goal lead. The Sabres stole a point and rolled the bones for the other point by forcing overtime.
Eight hours before Reinhart scored his dramatic goal, I tweeted that he would score a goal against his hometown Canucks.
The pressure was ratcheted two-fold when Sabres center Evan Rodrigues went to the box for tripping with 1:04 remaining in regulation play. The Sabres penalty killers bent but didn't break during the 4 on 3 penalty kill. Both teams traded chances when the game went back to 3 on 3 play. Then, with one minute remaining in OT, Jeff Skinner was sent to the box for tripping Canucks rock star Elias Pettersson, who had the puck on his stick in a shooting position in a high danger scoring area in front of Carter Hutton.
Talk about clutch. The Sabres killed off the late Canucks power play opportunity.
Then, Jack Eichel and Casey Mittelstadt scored in the shootout to give the Sabres yet another fantastic finish.
Markstrom's jock strap is still burning!
Nathan Beaulieu scored Buffalo's first goal.
Sabres super rookie Rasmus Dahlin chipped in two assists for his first NHL multi-point game of his career.
Carter Hutton made 36 saves for the Sabres, who improved their season record to 9-6-2.
Loui Eriksson, Jake Virtanen and Erik Gudbranson scored for the Canucks.
Jacob Markstrom made 34 saves for Vancouver (10-6-2), which extended its point streak to seven games (5-0-2).
The win gives Buffalo 20 points on the season, good enough for third place in the Eastern Conference at the time of this writing.
