Scheifele shines as Jets beat Devils

It was another one of those games where the top stars for the Jets took over and put the team ahead even though there was a push back from the opposition.

Jack Roslovic opens the scoring for his first of the season and then it was Mark Scheifele with his first of the night 29 seconds later to give the Jets a 2-0 lead early in the game. The Devils got within one when Seney scored his first career goal and if you are a social media person you obviously saw the reaction. Myers again was looking at the play away from doing anything and like the goal on Friday that Colorado scored the tall defender seemed to be looking for something else to happen not what was actually happening in front of him.

The constant Myers beating in this space is getting old but it won't stop until he stops making these mistakes. This is not a skill issue, a physical issue or anything else other than how he reads a play. He needs to be better and he needs help to understand his role and how to see the game.

Scheifele got his second of the night to give the Jets a 3-1 lead early in the second period with the assist from Toruba. The big guns were firing and that's what makes the Jets deadly- the weapons at their disposal are plentiful and lethal. After the Devils scored another to get close there was a delayed penalty the Jets managed to control for some time. They were able to make a change and had an extended 6 on 5 advantage before Nik Ehlers got the puck and ripped it past Cory Schneider on a one-timer as it came off the boards to him. That was just the 4th goal this season for Ehlers but they seem to be coming regularly now and should Ehlers keep this pace he could be back into 30 goal pace again.

The Jets made it 5-2 in the second period when Mathieu Perreault scored his 3rd of the year and there was no looking back. The Devils pushed, fired a lot of pucks at the net but for the first time this season Connor Hellebuyck posted back-to-back plus .900 efforts. He was good when the team needed him to be and that's the refreshing part as while the Jets have won games back-to-back they have not done it with consistent goaltending from Hellebuyck.

Kyle Connor managed an assist and was named 3rd star but he was far more dangerous than the score sheet presented. He carried the puck with confidence and made more than a few chances happen with his puck control and vision. There's a maturing confidence with Connor and while he is not with Scheifele and Wheeler anymore he is still playing fantastic hockey.

The other point to note is the Jets kept the Devils' top line in check and off the score sheet much like they did on Friday night against the Avalanche. Paul Maurice credited Morrissey and Trouba for that but does the effort go beyond them?

At 5 vs 5 Taylor Hall and Travis Zajac had to run with Scheifele and Ehlers and Wheeler tonight. The Jets forwards more than kept them in check and even the defense pairing to Trouba and Morrissey held their own too. Chiarot and Byfuglien were just as effective for the most part.

Did you see the Byfuglien penalty for the shoulder hit? 2 minutes for being too big as there was no head contact just a steam roll of Boyle that was not even charging.

The Jets host the Capitals on Wednesday who were 4-1 losers to Arizona at home tonight. Given the history from the old SE Division days this game could be a fun one to see, even more so as the Caps are the current Stanley Cup Champions.

Two solid back-to-back efforts should put some fears aside but with a tough 4 game road trip through Vancouver, Calgary, Minnesota and St Louis the Jets have some tests coming up. Washington and Buffalo first though.
