Auston Matthews Is Never Coming Home

The Arizona Coyotes fans that I know continue to hold out hope that one day Auston Matthews will come home.

With recent talk that he might get an offersheet going around, I figure now is as good a time as any to put that to bed.

Not going to happen.

Zero chance.

Never.

Sorry.

Obviously the fact that Auston Matthews is first player to come out of Arizona to make the NHL, and the fact that he's one of the best player in the NHL and will probably end up the best ever American player makes for good romance.

There is no doubt that it'd be a nice story, but it's never happening.

The idea of an offersheet is hilarious. They never happen and the Leafs are highly unlikely to let the best player in franchise history get to July 1st without a contract.

But even if that happens, there is a 100% chance the Leafs would match the offer, so it would be a complete waste of time.

Also, even if it wasn't, why would Matthews want to leave a team that looks like it's going to win the next six or seven Stanley Cups? He would have to be crazy.

The only hope for Coyotes fans is that Matthews signs with the Leafs for eight years (which he will) and then chooses to come here in free agency when he's unrestricted.

But for that to happen, he'd have to turn his back on the franchise he probably just led to several championships, and a place where he is worshiped like a God, and where he will at this point be considered the best player to ever wear their uniform.

And the Coyotes would still have to exist and be able to afford the most expensive free agent contract in the history of the NHL.

So, it's never going to happen.

Sorry!!

Auston Matthews will be a Leafs for life.
