Russians went for the gold, they ended up with a bronze.
After a heartbreaking 2-1 loss to the United States on Friday, Team Russia rebounded with a strong effort against Switzerland, as Kirill Slepets scored a hat trick and Pyotr Kochetkov made 34 saves in a 5-2 victory at the 2019 IIHF World Junior in Vancouver on Saturday to take the bronze medal.
Slepets, an undrafted 19-year-old forward playing for Yaroslavl Lokomotiv in the KHL, scored the opening goal for Russia and put the game out of reach with a pair of third-period goals.
The Swiss trailed 2-0 after 20 minutes on goals from Slepets and Nikita Shashkov, but responded in the second, narrowing the lead to 3-2 on goals from Valentin Nussbaumer and Yannick Bruschweiler.
Kochetkov made a series of remarkable stops before Bruschweiler’s goal late in the middle frame and held off a Swiss onslaught by stopping 17 shots in the third.
