In this edition of the hotstove, we share our midseason picks for the Selke Trophy.

Mark Stone.

The Ottawa Senators are bad. Really bad. They are very top-heavy up front, their defense core is horrendous, and they don't have good goaltending. As such, it's no surprise they own a 43.94 Corsi For%, 46.11 Scoring Chance For%, and 43.87 Goals For% at 5v5. Despite the albatross around him, Stone still owns a 52.77 CF%, 56.74 SCF%, and 58.11 GF%.

It's not like those numbers are just the byproduct of overwhelmingly good offensive play. The defensive impact he makes is nothing short of incredible. With Stone on the ice, the Senators give up 13.4 fewer shot attempts/60 than they do without him. Among 273 forwards who have logged at least 400 minutes at 5v5, that's the 2nd best differential. He fares similarly well in the chance department, as the Senators give up 6.62 fewer per 60 with him on the ice. That differential ranks him 3rd.

He is having a truly incredible season at both ends of the ice and deserves to be rewarded for it.

Peter Tessier

Ahh the Selke the one that Flyers fans so desperately crave for the talented Sean Couturier. He's been deserving in the past but hard to give any Flyer much credit with the overall performance of the team, right or wrong. Now look west though and see Calgary and the reborn Elian Lindholm.

Not only are his shots against showing at the top of the league he's also driving play the other way. I't like he's a new age Krejci who is right behind him and an obvious candidate as well.

The other surprising player is the Montreal rookie Kotkaniemi who leads the league in CA/60 for centre and oh look at his CF% 58!!!

While there is ton of talent to choose from this year I think these are the guys who will get consideration. One thing though if you search for this with more than centres who have played 500 5vs5 minutes or more only one displaces the others Evander Kane and it's likely he's not getting the votes. I'd say give it to Lindholm and make it sting a bit more in Carolina.
