I've got a few different blogs in the works right now. Over the next week or two we are going to talk about whether or not Khaira should be looked at as a long term top 6 option, which goaltender between Koskinen and Talbot should be signed after this season and potential options to bring in as a backup, and what, if anything has changed to Milan Lucic's game since the beginning of January.

Today we are going to continue playing armchair GM.

Normally I am not a writer who enjoys delving much into armchair GMing, it's almost always unrealistic for one side or another and are always vastly different from the real trades we see in the NHL. The most interesting thing I find with coming up with trade ideas is seeing how different fan-bases value different players. For me it's less about focusing on Edmonton needing to acquire Jakob Silfverberg, but instead, why is a toolkit like Silfverberg is appealing for this team?

So...Jake Muzzin...

Pierre LeBrun reported a day ago that the asking price from the LA Kings was a 1st round pick as well as a prospect. He also noted that there is no guarantee he will be traded, as he does have one more year left on his contract at 4 million.

The Kings are in a tough spot. They have one of the oldest teams in the NHL, sit third last in the league, and have a number of contracts that are signed from now till the end of time.

Muzzin is going to be an attractive option for any team, he logs over 20 minutes a game, produces at even strength and on the powerplay, while arguably being the Kings best all round defender. Currently he is playing on the second pairing away from Doughty but on most teams he is a top pairing guy.

Let's go with the Kings asking price; the Oilers could offer their first round pick, as well as a prospect like Caleb Jones, who is proving he has top 4 NHL potential. That is an easy starting point for the team, albeit one that other teams could likely match or surpass.

Let's up the ante:

Oilers send a 1st round pick, Caleb Jones, Jesse Puljujarvi, Ryan Spooner, and a third round pick in exchange for Tyler Toffoli and Jake Muzzin.

The Kings get two high end prospects, one at forward and one on defense, a first and third round pick, and take on some salary in Ryan Spooner. Edmonton gets the two best players of the trade easily, however the biggest gamble is that both players are UFA after one more season. In order for this deal to work for Edmonton, new contracts would need to happen for both players.

Capwise, Edmonton is so close to the cap, another deal would need to occur, likely one that sends a player like Cam Talbot out, in exchange for a cheaper backup.

When everyone is healthy, the Oilers could role a lineup that looks like this:

Draisaitl-McDavid-Chiasson
Khaira-RNH-Toffoli
Lucic-Cave-Rieder
Rattie-Brodziak-Kassian

Klefbom-Larsson
Muzzin-Russell
Nurse-Sekera
Benning, Manning, Petrovic

Koskinen

Dare to dream everyone, happy Friday and thanks for reading.
