In this edition of the hotstove, we share our thoughts on which defenders teams should avoid at the trade deadline.

Todd Cordell

Adam McQuaid.

He is a big, physical defender with a ton of playoff experience. He is exactly the type of player GMs of contending teams chase and, in many cases, overpay for at the trade deadline.

This is McQuaid's 10th NHL season. Every single year his teams have controlled a lesser share of the shot attempts and scoring chances with him on the ice (5v5). He's made a negative impact on his team's goal share in four of the last five years, too, with the lone exception coming this season on a bad Rangers team.

He is ineffective breaking the puck out of the defensive zone, he doesn't drive play up ice, and he contributes very little – if anything – once shop is set up in the offensive zone. McQuaid is essentially just a crease clearer.

I don't think that's worth investing quality assets in, and I think it'll be necessary to land his services. Thus, it's probably best to stay away.

Peter Tessier

There are a few players in this category if you looking at UFAs and in the 'strictly rental' category. I'd run from Kronwall and Del Zotto even if they were cheap, they are nothing more than a bad late-night TV ad for life insurance.

Frankly, there's not much on the market that is appealing who would be available or will be. If you want a rental, and given the talent available, maybe rethink and try and get someone with term. There really is not much upside in the rental market and teams could be spending good money after bad.
