In this edition of the hotstove, we share our thoughts on which team would be the best fit for Mark Stone should Ottawa trade him prior to the deadline.

I think Calgary would be a fantastic fit for Stone.

They already have one of the league's best top lines in Johnny Gaudreau, Sean Monahan, and Elias Lindholm.

If Stone were to join Matthew Tkachuk and Mikael Backlund, who have dominated at 5v5 for years (57.24 CF%, 55.68 GF%, 56.31% over nearly 2,200 minutes), they'd have a truly elite 2nd line, too. Few teams, if any, would be able to match that top-6.

I think Calgary could put together an enticing package including a 1st round pick, a promising, young defender with NHL experience (one of Juuso Valimaki/Rasmus Andersson/Oliver Kylington), and perhaps another piece or two depending on the defenseman they give up.

Sean Maloughney

The Winnipeg Jets seem like a likely destination to me. The Jets have a fantastic and top tier first line in Connor-Schiefele and Wheeler but their second line has much more of a fall off. With Ehlers out right now due to injury the task falls to Laine, Little, and Roslovic to man the second line.

The Jets are not producing at the same torrid pace they did last season but they are still a team with plenty of fire power. The addition of Stone to that top 6 would give them one of the most potent top 6 units in the entire league.

The Jets have a plethora of prospects as well as their first and second round picks for both this season as well as next to help make a deal with Ottawa. As far as resigning goes, with Myers likely leaving as a free agent, the Jets have some wiggle room to make a deal. They could also look to move a player like Ehlers out and acquire some solid pieces from him as well.

James Tanner

The best fit for Stone is any team that can acquire him. Playing in Ottawa has made him really underrated but he's a star player, probably one of the best wingers in hockey and will elevate anyone who trades for him. If Winnipeg, Calgary or Nashville got him, whichever one pulled it off would be the best team in the West. Winnipeg should go for him and is the best fit - imagine Stone, Wheeler, Laine, Ehlers, and Connor? That's the best winger depth in hockey right there.
