In this edition of the hotstove, we share our thoughts on the trade that saw Minnesota send Charlie Coyle to Boston in exchange for Ryan Donato and a draft pick?

I think this trade makes sense for both teams.

The Bruins are gearing up for another playoff run. In order to have a chance at success, they need more depth scoring. While Charlie Coyle isn't a dynamic offensive threat, he's averaged 1.68 points/60 at 5v5 since the beginning of 2017-18. That's more than Ryan O'Reilly, Kyle Palmieri, Clayton Keller, and Vincent Trocheck, to name but a few. He will help. He also brings a physical element that fits in nicely with how the Bruins play.

As for Minnesota, they needed a bit of a youth infusion and are adding a talented 22-year-old. Donato will be cheaper – giving them more financial flexibility moving forward – and is controllable for a long time.

James Tanner

This is a pretty crazy trade for the Bruins. Charlie Coyle is a very good, very underrated player who instantly makes them way better. The one thing I thought Boston lacked was a third line centre that could rival a team like the Leafs, who they'll almost certainly lose to in the first round. Now, Coyle is no Kadri, but he's a clear upgrade. This trade is pretty bizarre from the Wild standpoint, however, Coyle is only 26, his cap hit is reasonable, and he's signed through next season. And all this costs them is Ryan Donato and a 5th? That is a brutal return. After the pathetic trade of Nino Niederreiter for essentially nothing, it's clear that Paul Fenton is not cut out for this job. If someone makes you long for Chuck Fletcher, just how bad do they have to be? This is a great trade by the Bruins and an extremely crappy one for Minnesota.

Peter Tessier

The Bruins may have made one of those deals that when looking at it from the swapping of assets doesn't appear much it could be rather clever. Coyle is not a needle mover per se in his play but he's effective and probably not too disruptive to roster cohesion.

That could be an important aspect to the acquisition as it does not force the Bruins to adjust lines and tactics to much, his presence may enhance what they already do well.

For the Wild, Donato might be the kind of player who they can 'reclaim' and give a fresh start to as he seemed to never rise to expectations in Boston. Sometimes things don't fit right and perhaps Donato was not right for the Bruins at this time.

The good thing for the Bruins is the price was reasonable and if they want to make a bigger splash they can.
