By Jiminy, the Detroit Red Wings got goaltender Jimmy Howard’s name on a contract extension.

Slated to be an unrestricted free agent July 1, Howard agreed to a one-year extension worth $5.1 million. It consists of a $4 million base salary and $1.1 million in incentive clauses tied to the Wings making the 2019-20 Stanley Cup playoffs. It also does not include a no-trade clause, so the Wings would have the option of moving Howard at next season’s NHL trade deadline should they be so inclined.

Howard was merely pleased to know he’d guaranteed himself another season with the only NHL organization he’s known during his pro career.

“It’s an honor,” Howard told Detroitredwings.com. “It’s very special to be able to prolong my career here in Detroit. This is the only organization I know. I love playing for the Wings. My family loves living in Detroit.”

Howard also likes the notion of working on one-year deals.

“It totally makes sense to me,” Howard said. “I’ll turn 35 here in a week. From there on out, I’m fine with one-year contracts.”

De La Rose Recuperating
Wings forward Jacob De La Rose is back in Detroit and slated to undergo a battery of tests after he experienced an accelerated heart rate in a game for the second time this season.

The latest episode occurred Tuesday at Madison Square Garden against the New York Rangers.

“He’ll undergo some more testing tomorrow,” Detroit coach Jeff Blashill said. “I don’t really have any further update except he’s doing fine, he’s doing good.

“We’ve got him lined up to see a specialist and then potentially another specialist to make sure. We want to be extra cautious and make sure we get this handled and know exactly what the issue is.”

The Wings have no timetable on when De La Rose might return to the ice. His first episode of accelerated heart rate took place while he was still with the Montreal Canadiens, during a preseason game against the Ottawa Senators.

Daley Done
The Wings also confirmed that defenseman Trevor Daley’s season is all but done due to an arthritic condition in his lower back.

“With his back issue right now, it’s something where he needs rest,” Blashill said. “The only way to do that is for him to be out for the season.

“I think right now I’d say there’s a strong likelihood that Daley’s out for the year.”

Defenseman Libor Sulak was recalled from AHL Grand Rapids, but he’s been ill and won’t play Thursday at St. Louis.

Hobey Hirose
Fresh off his NHL debut and his first NHL point, an assist in Tuesday’s 3-2 win over the Rangers, Wings left-winger Taro Hirose was announced as one of the 10 semifinalists for the Hobey Baker Award as the NCAA’s top player.

He’s also been named Big Ten player of the year.

“I’m looking at it sort of as a team thing,” Hirose said. “I couldn’t have got any of those accolades without the coaches and my teammates.

“It’s really just good for the program and I’m just happy it’s getting the recognition it deserves.”
