For all the talk of tanking and not trying to win, the hockey gods smiled on the Rangers. For the first time in the post-expansion era, New York will pick in the top-three, selecting second overall. New Jersey moved from three to one and will select first overall for the second time in three years while Chicago rose from 12 to three in the lottery.

GM Jeff Gorton's good luck charm. All I can say is wow:

Odds for the first overall pick for each team in the lottery:

Odds for the Rangers to pick in slots 1-3 and 6-8 as New York can't pick fourth or fifth:

Full top-15 in order:

New Jersey is likely to select Jack Hughes at one. The Rangers should be all over Kappo Kakko at second. if for some reason New Jersey takes Kakko, Hughes in all likelihood will be the pick. The Devils won the lottery again but Chicago, going from 12 to three, is the real story, Two years ago, New Jersey had the major rise. Last season if was Carolina going from 11 to two. Three straight years where a team picking ion the double digits had a major rise in the lottery. For all the talk of tanking, that's not guarantee, look at Detroit and Ottawa. Colorado now picks fourth instead of first, based on the standings, making Ottawa's decision to take Brady Tkachuk look brilliant.

For a good breakdown of Hughes and Kakko, see this from Corey Pronman ($):

Rejoice Rangers' fans, elite talent is on the way with more likely to come in free agency. This is a franchise chasing move and hopefully sets up the organization for the future. Now add Artemi Panarin and the rebuild should be accelerated nicely.
