Quick Hits: May 5, 2019

1) Back on April 18 (the day of Alain Vigneault's introductory press conference at the Skate Zone in Voorhees), I saw something I had never previously seen within a week or two Flyers season ending: one of the team's players already starting his offseason on-ice workouts, shooting dozens of pucks. The play was Ivan Provorov. Over on the Flyers official website, I profiled Provorov's disappointment with his and the team's 2018-19 season and focus on turning the learning experience into a positive moving forward. 2) OHL Finals: The Guelph Storm fell into an 0-2 deficit in the championship round series with the Ottawa 67's after a 4-3 regulation loss in Ottawa on Saturday. Isaac Ratcliffe did not record a point. The scene shifts to Guelph on Monday for Game 4. Game time is 7 p.m. EDT.

3) The first full day of competition at the 2019 World Selects Invitational U15 and U16 tourney will take place on Sunday in Voorhees. At the opening ceremony on Saturday, guest speakers Joe Birch ((representing the OHL/CHL), Rocco Tullio (OHL, Oshawa Generals), Mark Howe (NHL, Detroit Red Wings) and Brent Darnell (College Hockey Inc./NCAA) addressed the players and families in attendance.

Said Howe, "My father was arguably the greatest hockey player in the history of the game and he never once told me after a game what I did wrong as a kid. He let me learn for myself and answered questions if I asked, but encouraged me to speak to the coach whenever possible about what I was confused about or wanted more details on. All he was there to do every time he got to watch me play was pat me on the back and ask if I worked hard and had fun."

4) On Thursday, the Flyers will be hosting an Inside Edge happy hour event at the Wells Fargo Center for prospective new and renewing season ticket holders. The event includes a tour of the Flyers locker room, food and beverages, and a Q&A session about Inside Edge, the organization's redefined season ticket membership program. 5) May 5 Flyers Alumni birthday: Mikael Renberg (1972)
