This morning news dropped that Craig MacTavish was leaving the Oilers organization to head to the KHL to coach. He signed a two year deal with Lokomotiv. According to Darren Dreger, MacTavish felt he needed a change, returning once again to his coaching roots.

And let the speculation commence.

It was clear from day 1 that Ken Holland was going to have full autonomy over this team to hire and fire whomever he wished to. There are no reports to suggest that Holland specifically showed MacTavish the door, but it isn't difficult to put two and two together. Whether Holland himself handed MacT a pink slip, or MacTavish believed his opinion would no longer be heard, at least one member of the "Old Boys Club" will not remain in Oil Country.

Ken Holland may or may not be the right person for the job, but he is a man who values input from others and has always preferred to lead by committee. The search for a coach is ongoing and is likely number one on the to-do list but we may see more moves like this in the coming weeks.

While public perception on MacTavish has soured over the years, he was a great coach for Edmonton during his tenure and was part of the 2006 Cup run and a major reason why we can remember those days so fondly. Best of luck to Craig in his new career!
