From a guy who played 1249 NHL games and amassed 1809 penalty minutes to NHL referee.

Makes for a good story, a great headline and would be an even better reality. Can a recently retired player make a good referee. It would be ironic to see Scotty out there trying to break up fights and call slashing penalties. This could be a great PR move for the league if Hartnell took a serious run at it. Have him ref a couple of pre-season games and see how he does. NHL is always in for a good PR stunt. If it doesn't work out at least they get some press out of it, he does an interview saying how hard it really is and everyone (including current players and coaches) have a little more respect for the job professional referees do.

John Davidson

The inevitable news came on Friday. John Davidson is leaving the Jackets to join the front office of the New York Rangers. This is no surprise but does not make it any less sad. John is a Ranger at hart and this is probably a job he has wanted for a long time. I say, Good Luck and Thank You. Mr. Davidson brought respectability to a team that had a hard time getting any in this league. He is a true gentlemen of hockey through and through. There was a change in this organization when he walked in the doors. Almost overnight Columbus became a 'Real Hockey Team' and a destination that free agents would finally take seriously. From the fan perspective it is hard to know how many decisions he personally made and how much influence he had over the coach and GM, but his hockey knowledge and guidance will be missed.
