Welcome back to re-draft Friday. Today we're looking at 2013.

Before we dive in, a couple of updates from Blackhawks' World:

* Tomas Mitell named Assistant Coach yesterday Mitell previously worked under Colliton in Sweden. I made a few comments on the message board yesterday but the biggest thing that jumped out to me that this is a Jeremy Colliton hire. Stan Bowman is given his young coach full autonomy to make a big decision like this, whereas in Quenneville's last few year's in Chicago Bowman had his hands a little more in the decision making of the assistants.

* At the World Championships, the Hawks will have Anisimov, Strome, Jokiharju, Lankinen and Kubalik are moving on with their respected countries, while Kane, DeBrincat, Gustafsson, Kruger, Kurashev and Kahun all head home. The biggest surprise would be the Americans, who had a really good team that went overseas – it looks like they could have used some better goaltending – but nonetheless, a solid team.

* The Memorial Cup continues and QMJHL's Rouyn-Noranda Huskies and OHL's Guelph Storm will battle it out tonight with the winner moving on to the final vs. the Halifax Mooseheads. The ideal scenario for Blackhawks fans would be to see Guelph win tonight to have the opportunity to watch Mackenzie Entwistle go head-to-head against Alexis Gavel and Jake Ryczek. You can cheer on Guelph tonight at 7 pm EST.

Ok, back to re-draft Friday – as mentioned above and in the title, we're looking at the 2013 entry draft, which was held on June 30th (my birthday) in New Jersey.

The Colorado Avalanche won the draft lottery taking them from 2nd to 1st. They selected super stud, Nathan MacKinnon.

Remember, this was the lockout year where the Blackhawks went on to win the Western Conference, President's Trophy and, oh yeah… that other big shiny cup.

The Hawks were an incredible 36-7-5 with a goal differential of +55. (<- I miss those days, but I digress).

With the Championship and taste of victory over the Boston Bruins still fresh, the Blackhawks and Stan Bowman entered back into their "new norm" – the offseason purge.

The Summer of 2013 was not near as bad, really only needing to shed Dave Bolland and Michael Frolik from the roster. Those were two key members of these winning teams though, however, Bowman had little choice and promotions from within were going to be needed.

Here's the breakdown leading up to the 2013 draft/offseason:

How did the draft go for Mark Kelley and Co.?

* 5 out of the 8 selections the Hawks had have played at least 15 games in the NHL
* 4 players are still with the organization
* 575 total NHL games
* 68 goals and 151 points

Here's the full list:

CHI-picks

Not terrible when you look at their work as a whole. Could there have been better picks though? Let's look at Round 1 and 2 to see who else was out there:

The Hawks selected local kid Ryan Hartman at 30th. In retrospect, there aren't any players taken immediately after him that jump out and someone that the Hawks should have taken instead. So solid pick still 6 years later.

The rest of the draft for the Hawks saw them 3x Swedish defensemen and 4x forward out of the USHL. So Kelley and his scouts didn't really branch out that much. That's not to say that that was a bad strategy though as Dahlstrom appears to be finally coming into his own as a depth NHL dman, John Hayden, while he may be falling out of favour in Chicago offers the Hawks something they currently do not have in a big, physical 4th liner and Luke Johnson could end up playing a solid 4th line centre role one day. Anthony Louis is stashed in Rockford for at least another year I would assume as well.

Hartman and Mott are no longer on the team but prove to be competent NHLers.

When you're drafting last, I'm not sure what the expectations are, however, the Hawks came out "ok" in this draft. They didn't find any superstars but rather valuable role players that are contributing in some way to their current team.

Now on to the awards:

Best Value Pick – Brett Pesce (CAR) in the 3rd rd, 66th overall
Worst Pick – Emile Poirier (CAL) in the 1st rd, 22nd overall
"Oh Hey, I Forgot About Him" Pick – Marco Dano (CLB) in the 1st rd, 27th overall

See ya out there,
