The Arizona Coyotes - according to multiple reports - are going to pursue Matt Duchene, should the star forward, ex of the Senators, Avalanche and possibly Blue Jackets, become available July first.

Now this is great news, should the rumours be true.

It's great news in that the Coyotes plan to pursue one of the top available free-agents.

Actually getting him might prove more difficult, but a sincere plan to get one of the best ever UFA players is fantastic news for the Coyotes.

Matt Duchene would help this team immensely, since they have virtually no offense. Or, I guess I should say they have a lot of secondary offense, and some hope, but no top-of-the-lineup superstar as of yet.

Duchene would make them at least a quasi-contender.

I am a medium level Matt Duchene fan. He's got skill, but he has never really lived up to his reputation. This last season was a career high 70 points, and I think the way people talk about him, it seems like his ceiling should be higher.

Duchene is going to get paid a crazy amount, and it's going to be way more, and for way longer than is advisable.

But if you're the Coyotes and you can land a #1 centre / super-star UFA, you've got to through caution to the wind and do it.

Landing Duchene for the Coyotes would mean so much more than just getting a decent but overpaid star. It would give the franchise credibility.

It would give them a marketing tool.

And a Duchene-OEL-Raanta lineup is a good, possibly excellent lineup.

Now, I would way rather pay Artemi Panarin, but if this could actually happen, I think it would be amazing, even if Duchene is a bit overrated, and likely to be a lot overpaid.
