Join us for SlapShot Radio tonight at 6pm central on 102.5 the Game as Brent, Zack and me welcome the Nashville Predators Director of Hockey Operations and the Program Director for the Elite Edge Hockey Showcase, Brandon Walker. We’re talking developing the next wave of NHL talent… oh… and we will also pregame Game Seven of the Stanley Cup Final. That’s all tonight on SlapShot Radio.

Game seven.

There are no sweeter words for hockey fans and to make it even sweeter… tonight is the first Stanley Cup Final game seven in eight years. After playing an 82 game regular season, these two teams have played another quarter season in the last two months… tonight it’s game 106 for Boston, 108 for St. Louis.

That’s a lot of hockey, and it’s the last hockey of the 2018-19 season, so there is just a small tinge of sadness to go along with the incredible anticipation.

Boston is looking for their seventh Stanley Cup win in that franchise’s long and storied history and looking for only their second cup win since 1972. The quotes from the Bruins all surround how difficult it is to get back to the Final, to get back to having a chance to lift the Cup as multiple members of this team remember 2011 and the difficult time they had getting back to the Final.

For St. Louis, well… they have never won the Cup and frankly; the three times they made the Final in their first three years of their existence were a result of a setup that had an expansion team guaranteed to make the Final, which resulted in the Blues getting swept three straight times. In a “normal” divisional setup, that team doesn’t sniff the playoffs, let alone the Final. That being said, the Blues are the feel good story of the second half of the season… change coaches in mid-season, at the bottom of the standings as the year turns, then they catch fire and here they stand… on the edge of history.

The Blues have been road warriors throughout these playoffs, looking for an NHL record 10th road win that will give the franchise it’s first Cup in their 52 year history. Like I said… history.

The Bruins have a little history potential as well… Zdeno Chara will play in his 10th game seven, an NHL record and the Bruins will host their first Final game seven in franchise history.

The prevailing wisdom seems to give Boston the edge at home tonight… I am not so sure that is the case. This one is a pick ‘em in my book. It’s going to be a good one to close off a wild and crazy NHL season… enjoy.

Random Notes

- Anniversary – It was two years ago yesterday that the Pittsburgh Penguins lifted the Cup on Bridgestone Arena ice.

- Rules – Preds GM David Poile was part of the NHL/NHLPA Competition Committee that submitted recommendations for rule changes involving instant replay, playing rules and regular season tie-breakers.

- Rumors – Interesting how Anders Lee has shown up on rumor radar for the Preds. He would be a very nice add.

- Get Ready – Once the Cup is awarded tonight, the dam breaks on rumors, resignings and trades.

- NHL Awards – PK Subban will be a presenter at this year’s NHL Awards happening one week from tonight.

- OT One – The US Women’s Soccer Team is being criticized for their 13-0 smashing on Thailand yesterday. These criticisms are coming from outside the Thailand team… My take is if you don’t want these types of games, remove goal differential as a tie breaker.

- OT Two – Another criticism is that some pundits didn’t like the goal celebrations of the US team… oh please… let us know what the limitations are in celebrations... SMH
