The New York Islanders announced four signings earlier this week, with one of them being a contract extension for forward Anthony Beauvillier. The deal is for three years and carries a $4.15 million cap hit.
Beauvillier was originally drafted 27th overall by the Islanders back in 2015 and has spent the last five years with the team. The 24-year-old scored 15 goals and 28 points in 47 games with the team this past season, a pace of 26 goals and 49 points per 82 games. He was a restricted free agent and was coming off a two-year deal, which carried a $2.1 million cap hit.
So Beauvillier’s price does come in a bit higher than expected. It’s not a significant difference but if the Islanders were going up to that cap hit, I would’ve expected it to come on a four-year deal instead. I was also a bit surprised to see Beauvillier only get a three-year extension, as he’ll become an unrestricted free agent at just 27 years old. With him becoming a UFA in just three years, it means he’s set himself up for another large raise at that point. Ideally the Islanders would’ve gotten more term here, but the team does have to be conscious of not overspending, based on their cap situation.
Overall, it’s an alright deal for the Islanders and the overpayment here isn’t anything significant. Beauvillier should bring decent value for the price and given that the Islanders are in win-now mode, it’s a reasonable cap hit to have him at for three more potential playoff runs.
