The San Jose Sharks fell to a 1-2 record last night, with a 5-4 loss to the St. Louis Blues.

The Sharks got out to an early lead, going up by two goals in the first period. However, despite the fact that the Sharks had the lead at multiple points, it never felt like they were in control. Defensively, the Sharks were a mess and while the Blues may be a good team, they were getting excellent chances left and right. Erik Karlsson has been a defensive liability for the majority of the first three games and while he’s certainly not the only one to blame, he’s a leader on the team and needs to be better.

The worst part is that while Devan Dubnyk could have had a few of those goals, he actually made some great saves for the Sharks. If he had a really bad start, St. Louis probably could have buried a few more.

It’s great that the Sharks are creating chances and finding ways to score but it’s not going to matter if they can’t keep the puck out of their net. Allowing 13 goals in your first three games doesn’t exactly look great and San Jose doesn’t have the forward depth to outscore their opponents.

San Jose needs to figure things out defensively and if they can’t, this team is likely to struggle once again.
