The Anaheim Ducks opened their six-game homestand with a win last night, defeating the San Jose Sharks 4-3 in a shootout.
The Ducks opened the scoring with a nice passing play on a 2-on-0, ending in Derek Grant finishing off a final pass from Sam Carrick. The Sharks managed to respond though, as Logan Couture buried a loose puck that popped out to the front of the net and later, San Jose took the lead off a shot from Brent Burns, and Anaheim found themselves down a goal after 20 minutes.
Anaheim managed to tie it up in the second period though, as a puck went in off Rickard Rakell’s skate. Logan Couture got the Sharks their lead back on a power play later, but Rakell tied the game once more with his second tally of the night, drawing the game even heading into the second intermission.
We didn’t see a ton of quality chances exchanged in the third period, as the shots landed at just 9-8 in the frame. After neither team could capitalize in regulation and then overtime didn’t solve anything, it came down to a shootout.
After Trevor Zegras scored with the first shot, the next three shooters were stopped. This gave Rickard Rakell the chance to end it and he made no mistake, going to the backhand and roofing it past James Reimer for the win.
While it was a fairly even game overall, the Ducks were still outshot by a 43-29 margin. I don’t think the shot totals are fully reflective of how the game played out, but that’s still a high quantity of shots to allow.
Credit to Anthony Stolarz, who continues to be very good for the Ducks and has had very few poor outings this season. He’s quietly posted a .920 save percentage through 16 games this year, with an 8-5-1 record.
With the win, the Ducks improve to 25-19-9 and are 10th in the Western Conference. Their next game comes on Friday against the Los Angeles Kings.
