The Anaheim Ducks came up short against the Arizona Coyotes last night, losing 6-5 in overtime.

The Coyotes opened the scoring on their first shot of the game, as Travis Boyd got in alone and snuck a puck past John Gibson under three minutes into the game. The Ducks responded quickly though, as Kevin Shattenkirk put a one-timer past Scott Wedgewood to tie the game on a power play, before Hampus Lindholm got a pass on the rush and scored under a minute later, to put Anaheim ahead.

The Ducks increased the lead to 3-1 right after that, as Jakob Silfverberg found Derek Grant with a pass in front and he converted as well. Shots were 9-1 in favour of the Ducks about midway through the period, and Arizona really wasn’t getting much going. The Coyotes would cut the lead to a single goal before the end of the frame though, as Christian Fischer knocked down a puck and put it into an open net.

Arizona really took control in the second period, outshooting the Ducks 13-6. It looked like Anaheim would escape the frame with a lead intact, but Clayton Keller took a breakaway pass from Shayne Gostisbehere and went in alone with under a minute remaining, making a nice move to beat Gibson.

The Ducks took their lead back early in the third period, as Trevor Zegras’ shot deflected in off Ilya Lyubushkin. The Coyotes responded later though, as Travis Boyd made a perfect pass to Andrew Ladd, who tapped the puck past Gibson to tie the game again. Then just a minute later, Arizona took the lead off a goal from Phil Kessel, who got to a loose puck in front and put it into an open net. The Ducks would bring the game back even once more though on a power play later in the frame, as Hampus Lindholm got a puck through traffic from the point and it found its way in. Despite the Ducks outshooting the Coyotes 19-6 in the final frame, the game went to overtime tied 5-5.

In the extra frame, Clayton Keller picked up the 11th and final goal of the night, sneaking a shot through Gibson to get Arizona the win.

The Ducks outshot the Coyotes by quite a margin and were the better team in both the first and third periods, but let this one slip away. They allowed some really good chances against, though John Gibson didn’t look great in the loss either.

Max Comtois made his return to the lineup, playing with Ryan Getzlaf and Troy Terry, registering one shot.

Anaheim’s next game comes on Monday against the Edmonton Oilers.
