I’ve been negative about the Ducks a lot this season but this was one game where they outshot and outchanced the Blues and did deserve the win. The Ducks were the better team by quite a margin but just couldn’t capitalize on their opportunities and couldn’t catch a break.
That’s been an ongoing issue for Anaheim this season. It’s certainly not the only issue, as often they don’t get the chances to begin with. But in yesterday’s loss, not being able to bury their chances made the difference.
Some thoughts: I’ve liked what I’ve seen from Josh Mahura so far this season. He’s fairly involved and is making some smart plays in the offensive end. I don’t think he’s been bad defensively either. Speaking of bad defensively though, the Ducks need to limit Kevin Shattenkirk’s ice time, in my opinion. Play Jani Hakanpaa more and reduce Shattenkirk’s role at even strength, then let him go to work on the power play.
As for Trevor Zegras, he’s come close to scoring in a few games now and has generally been playing well. I will say he’s having some issues with puck control in the offensive zone at times, likely as a result of less time and space to make plays. Regardless though, he’s adjusting quite well overall.
So Anaheim continues to drop games and despite a good performance, they couldn’t get the job done last night. Their schedule doesn’t get any easier either, with a two-game series against the Colorado Avalanche beginning tomorrow.
