The Anaheim Ducks fell 4-1 to the New York Rangers tonight, marking their fifth loss in the last six games.
Several players remained out in COVID protocols for the Ducks. Meanwhile, Jacob Perreault made his NHL debut, while Trevor Zegras returned to the lineup and Greg Pateryn drew in.
The Rangers had some good chances on a double-minor penalty from Trevor Zegras in the first period but Anthony Stolarz came up big with multiple saves. The Ducks responded after that with some chances of their own but neither team could get on the board.
The Ducks managed to open the scoring midway through the second period, as Troy Terry spun around to find Isac Lundestrom with a great pass and Lundestrom made no mistake. However, the Rangers wasted little time responding, as Kaapo Kakko got a quick pass to Mika Zibanejad and he buried it from in-close, with the puck deflecting off Max Comtois’ stick. Despite the Rangers having a 20-11 lead in shots through 40 minutes, the game remained 1-1 heading into the second intermission.
The Rangers took the lead just a couple minutes into the third period, as Jarred Tinordi put a shot on net from the point and it deflected in off the stick of Jacob Perreault. New York took over in the final frame and extended the lead midway through the period, as Ryan Lindgren also beat Stolarz with a point shot through traffic.
The Ducks finally had a good opportunity with a gift of a delay of game penalty after the goal but it ended prematurely, once Anaheim took a too-many men penalty. With the Ducks managing limited chances after that, Ryan Lindgren sealed the deal with an empty net goal.
This is definitely a game for the Ducks to forget. They were missing key pieces, which needs to be factored in, but they were flat for a good chunk of the second half of the game, getting outshot 40-14 overall.
Jacob Perreault got a good opportunity, getting some time on the power play and being relatively involved, even if he tipped a puck into his own net. Anthony Stolarz was very good again as well.
Anaheim is back in action tomorrow night against the Detroit Red Wings.
