The Anaheim Ducks dropped their second straight game following the holiday break, falling 3-1 to the Vegas Golden Knights today.
The Golden Knights dominated early on, outshooting the Ducks 16-4 in the opening frame. Nicolas Roy got Vegas on the board midway through the frame, tipping in a point shot. Adam Brooks then extended the lead late in the period, following suit and deflecting a shot (that initially didn’t seem like it actually went in) to give the Golden Knights a 2-0 lead after 20 minutes.
Vegas extended their lead in the second period, as John Gibson ended up on the ice and Mattias Janmark put the puck past him into the open net. The Ducks spent a good chunk of the period shorthanded which made sustaining any offense a tough task and while they did manage to kill off the penalties, they were also outshot terribly again, this time 18-6.
The Ducks at least managed to limit shots against to an extent in the third period and did get on the board with just 12 seconds left to break the shutout, as Ryan Getzlaf took a pass from Sonny Milano and buried a power play goal. That’s as close as the Ducks would come though, falling 3-1.
The Ducks were outplayed badly pretty much from start to finish. It certainly didn’t help that they couldn’t stay out of the box, though it did mean the penalty kill going 6-for-6 was arguably the bright spot of the game.
Anaheim has underperformed in their two games since returning from the break, though notable absences didn’t help their situation either. That said, they’ll need to get back on track right away, to avoid losing ground in a tight Pacific Division.
Anaheim’s next game comes on Sunday against the Colorado Avalanche.
