The Anaheim Ducks lost 4-1 to the Pittsburgh Penguins tonight, falling to 2-4-2 over their last eight games.
Hampus Lindholm and Derek Grant returned to the Ducks’ lineup, after exiting COVID protocols.
Jeff Carter opened the scoring just over a minute into the game, as Troy Terry got the puck taken off him and Carter put a shot past Anthony Stolarz. It was a pretty rough opening frame after that, as the Penguins controlled a lot of the period, outshooting the Ducks 16-7.
Pittsburgh extended their lead early in the second period, as Evgeni Malkin scored in his first game back this season, wiring a slapshot through traffic to beat Stolarz. However, the Ducks responded quickly after that, as Jakob Silfverberg picked up his first goal of the year, burying a loose puck in front. The Penguins got back their two-goal lead with a little over five minutes remaining in the frame though, as Malkin tipped in a nice slap-pass from John Marino for his second goal.
We saw a really slow start to the third period, with only four shots on goal total through the first. 11 minutes. The Penguins did a great job protecting their lead, just getting the puck out of the zone any time the Ducks made an entry. Then with three minutes to play, Jeff Carter scored his second goal of the game into an empty net.
It wasn’t a great game for the Ducks, who looked slow for a good portion of the night. The Penguins were pretty consistently getting to loose pucks and winning battles, while the Ducks went for stretches without being able to get anything going. Anaheim has also now been outshot by a 108-67 margin over their last three games.
The Ducks desperately need to stop their slide, as other teams in the West start to catch up. They’ve also now played 22 home games compared to 17 road games, which doesn’t make their path to the playoffs much easier.
Anaheim’s next game comes on Friday against the Minnesota Wild.
