The Anaheim Ducks suffered a 5-0 loss against the Dallas Stars yesterday, marking their fourth loss in a row.
Dallas opened the scoring early, with Jason Robertson able to just bank the puck in off Urho Vaakanainen. The Ducks did end up outshooting Dallas through the first half of the period but gave up quite a few chances and ended up down at the end of the frame, which ended shortly after a fight between Simon Benoit and Mason Marchment.
The Stars extended the lead on a power play in the second period, with Robertson scoring his second goal of the game, picking a corner to put the puck off the post and in. Then a few minutes later, Joel Kiviranta made it a three-goal game, burying a rebound in-close. After allowing 16 shots in the period, the Ducks trailed 3-0 after 40 minutes.
Anaheim allowed yet another power play goal really early in the third period, with Robertson completing his hat trick, for a ridiculous 22nd goal of the season. Then later on, the Ducks couldn’t get the puck out of their own end and Wyatt Johnson capitalized on an opportunity in-close, going to the backhand to beat Stolarz. Jamie Benn ended up with a penalty shot late in the period but Stolarz came up with a save to help keep the game from becoming even more of a blowout, but after being outplayed in the third period as well, Anaheim fell 5-0.
It was just a game where the Ducks outmatched. They gave up 41 shots in the loss, were outplayed at even strength, and the penalty kill remained an issue. They gave up two power play goals, as their penalty kill continues to sit last in the league.
Urho Vaakanainen got a larger role in his second game back, playing nearly 20 minutes alongside Simon Benoit. With the injuries, the Ducks should get a good look at him over the next little while.
As another piece of bad news, Isac Lundestrom also left the game with an injury and didn’t return. Hopefully it’s not serious but he’s returning home from the road trip to be evaluated.
It marks the fourth loss in a row for the Ducks and the seventh loss over their last eight games. The Ducks will continue their road trip tomorrow afternoon, when they face the Minnesota Wild.
