The Anaheim Ducks picked up their first win since the All-Star Break last night, defeating the Vancouver Canucks 7-4.
The Ducks had a dominant first period and opened the scoring under a minute into the game, as Troy Terry managed to redirect Hampus Lindholm’s point shot past Thatcher Demko. Then only about 2:30 later, Derek Grant put a pass to Nicolas Deslauriers in front and he was able to tip it past Demko, making it a 2-0 game. Anaheim wasn’t done there, as Rickard Rakell extended the lead again on a power play, tipping in a shot from the point. After 20 minutes, the Ducks held a 3-0 lead and were outshooting the Canucks by an 8-2 margin.
Anaheim didn’t waste time before adding to their lead in the second period, as Adam Henrique tapped in a loose puck on another power play just 1:35 into the frame. Then only a few minutes after that, Sam Steel got to a puck in front and slid it under Demko, making it a 5-0 game, while Demko was pulled. The Canucks did gain some life after that, with goals from Tanner Pearson and Elias Pettersson bringing Vancouver back to within three, but Adam Henrique managed to poke in a loose puck late in the frame for his second goal of the night, leaving the score at 6-2 Ducks heading into the second intermission.
In the third period, Luke Schenn did a nice job blocking Derek Grant’s pass on a rush, but Deslauriers followed up and beat Jaroslav Halak, making it a 7-2 game. Conor Garland and Quinn Hughes did both score for Vancouver later in the frame, but the Ducks still cruised to a 7-4 win.
It was an impressive win for the Ducks, following three losses after the All-Star Break. They came out strong early and never really let their foot off the gas, really limiting chances for the Canucks throughout the entire game. It was also great to see scoring coming from all different parts of the Ducks’ forward group.
John Gibson did allow four goals on 20 shots and has been struggling (though he didn’t get any help in the losses to Calgary and Edmonton) but this time Anaheim’s offense made sure that wasn’t an issue.
The win wraps up a disappointing three-game Western Canada road trip, where the Ducks allowed 17 goals and went 1-2-0. Despite this, they’re returning home on a high note and will be back in action on Tuesday against the San Jose Sharks.
