The Anaheim Ducks lost to the San Jose Sharks at home last night, falling 6-1.
The Ducks went back to 12 forwards and six defensemen, as Jayson Megna played his first game with the Ducks since being claimed off waivers, while John Klingberg returned to the lineup and both Nathan Beaulieu and Colton White were scratched.
Anaheim found themselves down midway through the first period, as Timo Meier buried a pass from Erik Karlsson to open the scoring. It was an even, but fairly slow first period, and the Ducks trailed after 20 minutes.
Things then only went downhill for Anaheim in the second frame. About six minutes into the period, San Jose managed to score three goals in under two minutes, from Scott Harrington, Erik Karlsson and then a bad bounce leading to another from Nico Sturm, quickly making it a 4-0 game. Anaheim did get on the board soon after off a goal from Trevor Zegras, but still found themselves trailing 4-1 after two periods.
The final frame didn’t go much better for Anaheim. They really couldn’t get much going to try to get back into the game and ended up giving up an empty net goal to Nick Bonino, followed by another late goal to Steven Lorentz, on route to a 6-1 loss.
It’s a tough loss, with the Ducks being unable to build any momentum after their surprising win over the Carolina Hurricanes earlier in the week.
John Gibson's performance wasn’t great either and while most of the goals weren’t really his fault, he had been riding a stretch of good play coming into the game. Regardless though, when the Ducks are only generating 24 shots and scoring a single goal, it won’t often matter a ton how well the goalie plays.
The Ducks are now about to begin a stretch of five straight road games as well, starting on Monday against the Ottawa Senators.
