The Anaheim Ducks traded defensemen Jani Hakanpaa and Ben Hutton ahead of the deadline today, acquiring Haydn Fleury and a pick in the process.

Hakanpaa was traded to the Carolina Hurricanes along with a sixth-round pick in the 2022 NHL Draft, in exchange for Fleury. Hakanpaa played in all 42 of Anaheim’s games this year and was set to become an unrestricted free agent in the offseason. Fleury, on the other hand, is 24 years old and has one goal in 35 games with the Hurricanes this season. He has another year remaining on his contract at an AAV of $1.3 million and will be a restricted free agent once it expires.

Hutton was dealt to the Toronto Maple Leafs in exchange for a fifth-round pick in 2022. He was signed by the Ducks at the start of the season and registered five points in 34 games with Anaheim this year. Hutton is also set to become a free agent at the end of the season.

I’ll provide more thoughts on the Hakanpaa for Fleury trade in an article tomorrow.
