San Jose Sharks defenseman Erik Karlsson received another award nomination yesterday, being named as a finalist for the Ted Lindsay Award.

The award recognizes the most outstanding player in the regular season, as voted by their peers. Along with Karlsson, Connor McDavid and David Pastrnak were named as the two other finalists.

Karlsson was also previously named a finalist for the Norris Trophy. The defenseman registered 25 goals and 101 points in 82 games, leading all defensemen in both categories.

With these award nominations coming in, it’s another reminder of Karlsson’s value. He has another four years on his contract at an $11.5 million cap hit, and there likely won’t be a shortage of trade speculation this offseason (and rightfully so).

Regardless of whether Karlsson wins either award, whether or not he’s back in San Jose for the start of next season is going to be an interesting storyline to track, coming off such a dominant year.

GAUDREAU RE-ENTERING DRAFT

In other smaller news, prospect Benjamin Gaudreau will be re-entering the NHL Draft, according to San Jose Hockey Now’s Sheng Peng.

Gaudreau was selected 81st overall by the Sharks in 2021. The netminder posted an .889 save percentage in 44 games with the OHL’s Sarnia Sting this season.

While it’s obviously a waste of an asset to not sign a recent third-round pick and I’ll fully admit I’ve probably only watched Gaudreau play a handful of games, I don’t think this is a huge loss for San Jose. The netminder posted below a .900 save percentage in all four of his OHL seasons, (along with a disastrous performance in limited action with Canada at the World Juniors). Goalies are unpredictable, but there’s limited proof that he’d be become an NHL goalie.
