The Carolina Hurricanes suffered their first loss of the season yesterday, falling to the Columbus Blue Jackets by a score of 3-2. Here’s the recap.
The Blue Jackets opened the scoring halfway through the first period, when Ryan Murray made a great pass to find Markus Nutivaara who was alone at the side of the net, leaving Reimer without a chance.
Erik Haula tied it up a bit later though off a great feed from Ryan Dzingel, scoring what’s already his fifth goal of the season. Jordan Staal then almost tipped home the go-ahead goal but Joonas Korpisalo made a great reactionary glove save.
To start the second period, James Reimer made some great saves on Cam Atksinon who was alone in front of the net with plenty of time. Back at the other end, the puck found its way to Dougie Hamilton who blasted a point shot by Korpisalo give the Hurricanes the lead.
Before they could even finish announcing the goal though, Oliver Bjorkstrand controlled the puck all the way to the front of the net then beat Reimer over the shoulder, who was deep in his net.
Right off the following faceoff, Andrei Svechnikov got the puck and made a superb rush towards the net, getting by multiple Blue Jackets but Korpisalo somehow kept it out. Needless to say, it was a very entertaining first few minutes of the second period.
In the third period, the lone goal belonged to Pierre-Luc Dubois, who capitalized on a Brock McGinn turnover, took the puck down the ice on a partial breakaway and beat Reimer.
This was a pretty even game throughout and the Hurricanes just ended up on the losing end. Korpisalo was great and while Reimer can’t really be faulted for any of the goals, Korpisalo was a difference-maker with some of the stops he made.
Carolina’s next game comes Tuesday against the Los Angeles Kings.
