The Carolina Hurricanes made their final roster decisions and here’s a quick recap with some thoughts.
Haydn Fleury made the team over Gustav Forsling, while Forsling cleared waivers. It’s not surprising but I imagine Forsling won’t be around Charlotte for too long. Clark Bishop, Brian Gibbons and Roland McKeown were all sent to Charlotte as well.
Julien Gauthier didn’t make the cut either– but after the preseason he had you have to imagine he won’t be long for the AHL. While many were pulling for him to make the team out of camp, he’s probably getting a chance with the Hurricanes in the near future. Plus, maybe it’s better that he gets a bit of playing time in Charlotte versus what would probably be a pretty reduced role in Carolina right now.
Anton Forsberg cleared waivers meaning the goaltending duo is set as Petr Mrazek and James Reimer. Many disagreed when I said I thought Reimer could be a good backup in Carolina but I’d say just give it a chance. Bet on Reimer, hope he plays well and brings his value back up, then you have the option to move him more easily. This is Mrazek’s show now anyways, plus Forsberg and Nedeljkovic will make for a borderline unfair goaltending duo in the AHL.
On a side note, I didn’t have the time to write about it but in case you’ve been living under a rock and are now coming specifically to my blog for your Hurricanes news (I’m honoured), Jordan Staal is captain now. The announcement was made two days ago, with Jordan Martinook and Jaccob Slavin announced as alternate captains. It seems like a safe choice but also the right choice to have Staal as captain, using the same veteran leader/experience method as used with Justin Williams and this time giving Staal the role to himself.
