Both Galechenyuk and Paquette were new additions to the Senators this year and each has registered one goal so far this season. Galchenyuk and Paquette, both 27 years old, will both be unrestricted free agents in the offseason.
Dzingel will be returning to Ottawa, where he spent the majority of his career, before being dealt to Columbus and eventually signing with Carolina. Dzingel leaves the Hurricanes after scoring a total of 10 goals and 33 points in 75 games, between last season and the beginning of this year.
ANALYSIS
There’s a good chance we see the Hurricanes make another move, as Dzingel was likely dealt to create a bit of cap space. Dzingel’s AAV was $3.38 million, while Galchenyuk’s is $1.05 million and Paquette’s is $1.65 million. Should the Hurricanes choose to do so, they could bury Galchenyuk’s contract with no cap implications, while Paquette’s contract would cost only $575,000 against the cap, if buried. I'm not saying that's the route the Hurricanes go, as they'd save some space even without burying contracts, but they do have the option.
In terms of trading Dzingel, he was one of the more likely players to be moved in the offseason and it isn't shocking to see a deal get done early in the season. The Hurricanes have too many forwards as is, especially for the top-nine, and losing Dzingel isn’t a move that’s going to hurt the team.
Again, I think this move points to the fact that we'll likely see the Hurricanes make another trade at some point soon, perhaps involving the team adding a goaltender.
