The Carolina Hurricanes picked up their first win since returning after the All-Star Break, defeating the Boston Bruins 6-0 yesterday.
In an entertaining start to the game, the teams traded chances early on. The Hurricanes then opened the scoring on a power play, after Linus Ullmark couldn’t handle Teuvo Teravainen’s shot and Vincent Trocheck knocked in the rebound. Despite both teams getting some pretty excellent opportunities after that though in what was a penalty-filled first period, the game remained 1-0 at the intermission.
In the second period, Andrei Svechnikov extended Carolina’s lead, putting a nice wrist shot past Ullmark. Then about five minutes after that, Martin Necas’ shot produced a big rebound and Sebastian Aho went to the net to tap it in, making it a 3-0 game. The Hurricanes weren’t done there, as Brett Pesce got the puck after a flurry of saves by Ullmark and scored, making it 4-0 after 40 minutes.
Sebastian Aho picked up his second goal of the game just two minutes into the third period off a pass from Teuvo Teravianen on a power play, increasing Carolina’s lead to 5-0. Then after a fairly even final frame, Brady Skjei secured a 6-0 win for the Hurricanes later in the period, wristing a shot from the point that deflected in on its way to the net.
This was a really strong game for the Hurricanes and an important win, following the two losses to start the road trip.
Despite the score being 6-0 though, it doesn’t take away from Frederik Andersen’s performance. His 34-save shutout was absolutely well-earned and he was counted on to make some great saves on high danger chances in close.
Teuvo Teravainen also had three assists in his return to the lineup.
The win also marks the Hurricanes’ second blowout win in Boston this season, after defeating the Bruins 7-1 on the road last month. Carolina had also shut out the Bruins in a 3-0 win in October, meaning the Hurricanes outscored Boston 16-1 over their three matchups.
The Hurricanes wrap up their road trip tomorrow night against the Minnesota Wild.
