The Carolina Hurricanes earned their fourth straight win last night, defeating the Los Angeles Kings 4-2.
Teuvo Teravainen returned to the Hurricanes' lineup, playing with Andrei Svechnikov and Jesperi Kotkaniemi, while Derek Stepan was a scratch.
The Hurricanes went ahead early, with Jordan Martinook going in on a 2-on-1 and feeding Brady Skjei with a pass, who went to the backhand to beat Jonathan Quick. Then after outshooting the Kings by a 10-6 margin in the frame, Carolina capitalized again on a late power play, ripping a shot over Quick to extend the lead.
We saw 29 shots exchanged in the second period alone, with Sebastian Aho missing not one, but two excellent chances early in the period. However, Aho made up for it later in the frame, taking a pass from Martin Necas and making a move to beat Quick in front, making it a 3-0 game.
Carolina did let Los Angeles back into the game a bit in the third period, giving up 13 shots and a power play goal to Arthur Kaliyev midway through the final frame. However, Andrei Svechnikov put Carolina back up by three only a few minutes later, entering the Kings’ zone on a solo rush and banking the puck in off Drew Doughty. Samuel Fagemo did add a late goal for Los Angeles, but the Hurricanes held on for the 4-2 win.
It was another solid win for the Hurricanes, outplaying Los Angeles for the first 40 minutes, then managing to hold them off in the third period.
It marks the Kings’ fourth straight win and also the third win of their six-game road trip. After a long losing streak, it’s huge for them to be getting back on track (and they’re also starting to score at a healthier rate).
Getting Teravainen back is big as well, even if he didn’t provide a huge impact. Meanwhile, Jordan Martinook and Stefan Noesen continue to be two of Carolina’s most surprising producers, each adding an assist in the win.
The win also marked Brett Pesce’s 500th NHL game, all of which have came with the Hurricanes. Pesce continues to play a key role on the blue line, averaging nearly 22:30 per game.
Carolina continues the road trip with a game on Tuesday, when they face the Anaheim Ducks.
