The Carolina Hurricanes came up short in the battle between the Eastern Conference's top two teams, falling 4-2 to the Washington Capitals today.
It was a really fast-paced first period, with the Hurricanes getting some great chances early on. They managed to draw some penalties but couldn’t capitalize and ended up heading into the intermission still at a scoreless draw.
The Capitals started to get the better chances in the second period, however, and scored back-to-back goals midway through the frame, with Alex Ovechkin burying a great pass from Dmitry Orlov, before Aliaksei Protas scored his first NHL goal, banking the puck in off Tony DeAngelo.
The Hurricanes came out flying in the third period though, outshooting the Capitals 11-4 at even strength in the frame. Jesperi Kotkaniemi managed to cut the lead to a single goal, scoring with a well-placed shot after a feed from Jordan Martinook. Then later in the frame, the Hurricanes managed to tie the game just as their power play expired, as Martin Necas got the puck to Nino Niederreiter in front, who put it over Ilya Samsonov to tie the game.
However, the Hurricanes got into penalty trouble and it ended up costing them. They faced a 5-on-3 late in the game and just as they killed off the first penalty, Orlov snuck to the side of the net and scored to give the Capitals a 3-2 lead. The Hurricanes tried to push back but John Carlson secured the win with an empty net goal after that.
Despite the loss, it was a really entertaining game. The Hurricanes played well enough to win against another very good team, but it was just one that didn’t go their way. One of the goals they allowed was a fluke, another came when they were shorthanded, and the final one came on an empty net.
Despite allowing three goals on 24 shots, Frederik Andersen played well and made some difficult saves. Jesperi Kotkaniemi also continues to be more of a factor, which is extremely positive.
The Hurricanes battled back and had a good game, but one too many penalties made the difference.
