The Carolina Hurricanes split their back-to-back set of games this weekend, beating the Edmonton Oilers on Saturday, before losing to the Vancouver Canucks on Sunday.

With Carolina’s 3-1 win over the Oilers, they improved to 3-0-0 on their road trip and earned their fourth win in a row. Sebastian Aho opened the scoring in the first period, while Nino Niederreiter managed to sneak a puck through Mikko Koskinen in the second frame. Though the Oilers were able to pull back within a goal, the Hurricanes secured the win late in the third period, as Aho picked up his second goal of the game off a costly turnover from Koskinen. It was a great effort from the Hurricanes, who outshot the Oilers 31-23, though Frederik Andersen did make some key saves. It was also great to see Ethan Bear get such a warm reception in his return to Edmonton.

Against the Canucks, however, the Hurricanes came up short.

After a solid first period where the Hurricanes controlled a lot of the play, Brock Boeser scored to give Vancouver a first period lead, followed by Elias Pettersson making it 2-0 partway through the second frame. The Hurricanes would cut the lead in half early in the third period, with Martin Necas taking a nice pass from Seth Jarvis on a 2-on-1 and beating Thatcher Demko. That’s as close as they would come though, coming up short for their first loss of the road trip.

Sebastian Aho was out against the Canucks, so the Hurricanes went with seven defensemen as a result. He was on an absolute roll with five goals and 12 points over the last five games, and the Hurricanes certainly missed him.

Something else worth noting is how good of a job the Hurricanes have done limiting shots lately. Over their last four games, they’ve allowed just 94 shots, an average of less than 24 shots per game. That said, both Frederik Andersen and Antti Raanta faced some very good chances in most games on the road trip and have had to be very good.

The Hurricanes will wrap up their road trip on Tuesday against the Minnesota Wild.
