The Carolina Hurricanes picked up their fourth win in a row last night, defeating the Columbus Blue Jackets 4-0.
The Hurricanes dominated the first period, outshooting Columbus by a massive 16-3 margin. They sustained a lot of pressure and generated good chances but Jean–Francois Berube made some big saves and Carolina couldn’t convert, as the game remained scoreless through 20 minutes.
Carolina didn’t let up in the second period, putting another 22 shots on Berube. Finally about midway through the frame, Jordan Staal managed to get the puck back after being stopped on a breakaway and open the scoring, putting the puck over Berube. Then with under two minutes to go, Teuvo Teravainen scored with a nice shot after a faceoff to make it a 2-0 game, heading into the second intermission.
The third period was certainly the most even, but the Hurricanes still extended their lead early in the frame, when Nino Niederreiter banked the puck in off Berube on a pretty rough goal. Then only about 30 seconds later, as Vincent Trocheck snapped a shot past Berube, making it 4-0. Columbus generated some chances after that but Carolina held on, as Frederik Andersen picked up a shutout in the win.
It was a great game for Carolina, who dominated pretty much the entire game. They outshot the Blue Jackets by a massive 50-19 margin and certainly deserved the outcome they got.
The Hurricanes were without Tony DeAngelo in the win, who’s expected to be out about a month with a midsection injury. With Brendan Smith unavailable to fill in, Jalen Chatfield entered back into the lineup.
After a pretty slow start to the year offensively, Jordan Staal has been producing really well as of late. With his goal against the Blue Jackets, he’s scored three goals and seven points over his last eight games.
Carolina is now back on top of the Eastern Conference in points percentage, with a 36-11-4 record. Their next game comes tomorrow against the Edmonton Oilers.
