The Carolina Hurricanes continue to slide as the playoffs near, falling to both the Detroit Red Wings 3-0 on Thursday and the Colorado Avalanche 7-4 yesterday.
Against the Red Wings, yet again, the Hurricanes couldn’t bury their chances. They threw 46 shots on Alex Nedeljkovic but couldn’t beat him once, while Antti Raanta allowed three goals on 22 shots.
The loss to Colorado was rough, going down 4-0 by early in the second period and just not being able to catch up.
A road matchup against the Avalanche was always going to be tough, but the game was a bit concerning this close to the playoffs. However, the loss against the Red Wings once again highlighted the Hurricanes’ issues with capitalizing on their chances, which is happening far too frequently and has become a pretty major concern at this point.
The Rangers, on the other hand, picked up two 4-0 shutout wins in a row following their game against the Hurricanes. As a result of the Hurricanes’ two losses and the Rangers’ two wins, the teams are now dead even at 104 points, each with six games remaining in the season.
Five of Carolina’s six remaining games come against non-playoff teams, with the exception being a game the Rangers. If the Hurricanes can’t capitalize with the favourable schedule, it does leave them heading into the postseason with a complete lack of momentum.
Frederik Andersen and Jordan Staal both sustained injuries against Colorado and each left the game early. There’s no word yet on the seriousness of the injuries, but Andersen is having an MRI done to assess the lower-body injury.
Carolina’s next game comes tomorrow against the Arizona Coyotes.
