The Carolina Hurricanes picked up a home win over the Nashville Predators last night, hanging on for a 5-3 victory.

Brady Skjei opened the scoring for Carolina halfway through the first period, cutting to the backhand and beating Juuse Saros. Despite some pretty good chances being exchanged through the rest of the frame, Skjei’s goal remained the period’s lone tally, as Carolina took a lead into intermission.

In the second period, Martin Necas got a pass to Jesperi Kotkaniemi in a great spot and while Kotkaniemi’s initial shot was stopped, he followed up on his own rebound to make it a 2-0 game. After Luke Kunin cut the lead in half late in the period though, Jaccob Slavin scored with only a second remaining in the frame to reinstate the two-goal lead, in a period that the Hurricanes really controlled.

Andrei Svechnikov extended the lead to 4-1 on a power play in the third period and while late goals from Filip Forsberg and Tanner Jeannot did pull the game close, an empty netter from Svechnikov secured a 5-3 win for Carolina.

It was an important win for the Hurricanes, who have struggled a bit at times since returning from the All-Star Break. The second period in particular was all Hurricanes and while they did let Nashville back into the game a bit later, it was a strong game overall.

Andrei Svechnikov continues to be on a tear in 2022, having scored 13 goals and 25 points in 18 games. For reference, the second-most goals from any player on the Hurricanes in that stretch is less than half of that total, with Sebastian Aho, Vincent Trocheck and (shockingly) Brady Skjei each at six goals in 2022.

The Hurricanes remain first in the Metropolitan Division in points percentage and while they’ve fallen behind the Florida Panthers for the best points percentage in the Eastern Conference, they remain in the mix for top spot.

Carolina’s next game comes tomorrow against the Pittsburgh Penguins.
