The Carolina Hurricanes announced yesterday that they’ve signed defenseman Max Lajoie to a one-year contract extension, which carries a $750,000 cap hit.
Lajoie is 23 years old and was acquired from the Ottawa Senators just before the start of the season, in exchange for forward Clark Bishop. The defenseman spent the year with the AHL’s Chicago Wolves, scoring six goals and 21 points in 27 games, but did also suit up for the Hurricanes in two playoff games. In his time with the Senators, Lajoie also played a total of 62 NHL games, scoring seven goals and 15 points.
I was a fan of the team acquiring Lajoie and it’s nice to see that they’ll be keeping him around. Despite him being quite young and showing some potential, however, Lajoie will likely still have a tough time cracking the team’s crowded defense group next season. That said, Lajoie will no longer be exempt from waivers, meaning the Hurricanes could potentially lose him to another team in the process of sending him back to the AHL, if he doesn't win a roster spot.
