The Carolina Hurricanes wrapped up their six-game road trip yesterday, defeating the Philadelphia Flyers 6-3.
They kicked off the trip with three straight wins against the Vegas Golden Knights, Anaheim Ducks and Los Angeles Kings, before falling to the San Jose Sharks and Seattle Kraken, and finally ending the trip with their win over the Flyers. Altogether, Carolina went 4-1-1, picking up nine of a possible 12 points, which has kept them atop the NHL standings.
It was a hugely successful trip and considering the Hurricanes have played 12 of their 19 games so far on the road, it only makes their 15-3-1 record this year even more impressive.
A key piece of news during the road trip as well was that Seth Jarvis would be sticking with the Hurricanes this season, burning the first year of his entry-level contract. He scored three goals and five points in the six-game road trip and has seven points in 12 games overall this year. He’s been a great addition and considering his play and the role he’s taken on, it’s not overly surprising for him to be staying put.
Ethan Bear missed the last three games after testing positive for COVID-19, but Tony DeAngelo has continued to produce and has taken on a larger role in Bear’s absence, filling in to play with Jaccob Slavin. DeAngelo is now tied for third in the league in points amongst defensemen.
Jesperi Kotkaniemi also managed to snap an eight-game pointless streak, and has picked up two goals and three points in the past four games. It’s a positive for sure, considering Kotkaniemi’s run with the Hurricanes has been fairly underwhelming so far.
Antti Raanta played three of the games as well, performing relatively well. Raanta should help to take some of the workload and pressure off Frederik Andersen as well, though Andersen has obviously been outstanding so far.
You really couldn’t have asked for a better start to the season for the Hurricanes, as we hit the quarter mark of the year. Their next game will come tomorrow afternoon, as they host the Washington Capitals.
