The Carolina Hurricanes reportedly inquired about the availability of Dallas Stars defenseman John Klingberg, according to Sportsnet’s Jeff Marek.

Klingberg is 29 years old and has spent his entire career with the Stars to this point. He’s on the final year of his contract and Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman previously reported Klingberg is looking for an eight-year extension, worth between $62 and $66 million (an AAV of between $7.75 and $8.25 million).

However, Marek also noted that the Stars aren’t looking to trade Klingberg at this time. Considering he’s on an expiring contract though and the Stars aren’t necessarily a lock for the playoffs, it could become a possibility.

It would be somewhat of an interesting decision if the Hurricanes were targeting Klingberg, given their right side is fairly strong with Brett Pesce, Ethan Bear and Tony DeAngelo. Plus given his reported ask on a new deal, you have to imagine the Hurricanes wouldn’t be looking to sign him long-term.

We don't know if Klingberg will even become available before the trade deadline but considering what the team's defense group looks like and how much Carolina would likely have to pay, it doesn't seem like a fit.
