The Carolina Hurricanes took a 3-2 lead in their series against the New York Rangers, winning 3-1 in Game 5 last night.

Carolina came out with one of their strongest first periods of the series and outshot New York 11-5. About seven minutes into the game, Vincent Trocheck opened the scoring off a rush while shorthanded, burying a nice saucer pass from Jordan Staal. However, New York tied it before the end of the frame, as Mika Zibanejad one-timed a shot past Antti Raanta, sending the game tied to the intermission.

It looked like the Rangers then took the lead in the second period off a goal from Ryan Strome, but it was overturned after an offside challenge. The Hurricanes then managed to capitalize on a power play a bit later, with Seth Jarvis finding Teuvo Teravainen at the side of the net, who beat Igor Shesterkin. They outplayed New York in the frame once again and kept the lead through 40 minutes.

The Hurricanes continued to control the play in the first half of the third period, outchancing the Rangers by quite a margin. Then with just seven minutes to go in the frame, Andrei Svechnikov went in on a breakaway and went to the backhand to beat Shesterkin and extend Carolina’s lead. Carolina limited chances after that and held on for a 3-1 win.

It was probably Carolina’s most well-rounded game of the series, outshooting the Rangers by a huge 34-17 margin. They outshot New York and completely limited chances on route to a key win, with the team now at 7-0 in Raleigh this postseason.

Once again though, the series shifts back to New York with a huge opportunity for Carolina. The Hurricanes are 0-5 on the road in the postseason and have an opportunity to close out the series with a key road win. If they can’t get it done though, they’ll once again be forced to return home and remain perfect in Raleigh in order to advance.

Game 6 takes place tomorrow in New York.
