The Carolina Hurricanes took both games of their back-to-back set, following an overtime win against the Philadelphia Flyers today.
The Hurricanes started a bit slow, considering they didn’t manage a shot until the back half of the opening frame, even if some of the play was in Philadelphia’s end. They were outshot by an 11-2 margin and relied on some key saves by Frederik Andersen to keep the game scoreless through 20 minutes.
The Hurricanes opened the scoring under 30 seconds into the second period, as Jordan Staal tapped a loose puck to Nino Niederreiter, who beat Martin Jones. Just 34 seconds later, however, Gerry Mayhew banked a puck in off Sebastian Aho to quickly tie the game. Carolina took the lead back later in the frame though, as Andrei Svechnikov carried the puck into Philadelphia’s zone and went behind the net, putting a pass right to Sebastian Aho, which he directed in.
The Flyers tied it up once again early in the third period, with Isaac Ratcliffe trying a wraparound and the puck popping out to Patrick Brown, who buried it into the open net. The Hurricanes responded quickly to get their lead back, as Ian Cole’s point shot dropped down right to Vincent Trocheck, who backhanded it past Jones. Once again though, the Flyers managed to tie it up, as a point shot took a bounce and was redirected in by Oskar Lindblom, sending the game to overtime.
In the extra frame, Frederik Andersen was tasked with making several huge saves and it paid off, as Brett Pesce knocked down a mid-air pass from Vincent Trocheck and controlled it, before roofing it over Martin Jones for the win.
The Hurricanes certainly started slow, but picked up more momentum as the game went on. It wasn’t their best performance but they were on the second half of a back-to-back and got the two points, with some help from Frederik Andersen.
It’s worth noting that Tony DeAngelo left the game with an upper-body injury and did not return, after a slapshot that he took left him with discomfort.
With the win, Carolina took all four points of their Pennsylvania back-to-back and seven points of their last eight games overall, despite facing a relatively high quality of competition during the stretch. They’re important points and keep the Hurricanes in second place (points percentage) in a very top-heavy Eastern Conference.
Carolina will now have a break until Friday, when they face the Columbus Blue Jackets.
