With the round robin portion of the playoffs now complete in the Eastern Conference, the Carolina Hurricanes will face the Boston Bruins in the first round.
It’ll be a rematch of last year’s Eastern Conference Finals, in which Boston swept Carolina. This time, however, the Hurricanes are a much stronger team and should certainly be considered a threat to knock out the Bruins.
After Pittsburgh was knocked out by Montreal and Carolina swept New York, the Hurricanes became the top team from the qualifying round to advance and will be the fifth-ranked team in the Eastern Conference. The Bruins may be the defending Prince of Wales Trophy winners but they’ve been struggling since the season resumed, losing all three of their round robin games.
We don’t have much to go off of in terms of who has the advantage here, considering they met only once this year before the season was paused. In that game, however, the Bruins beat the Hurricanes 2-0.
I don’t mind this matchup for Carolina, especially considering the direction each team has been going. The Hurricanes looked great in the qualifying round and dominated the Rangers, while the Bruins have been outscored 9-4 in their three games.
