The Carolina Hurricanes’ second round opponent was determined last night, with the New York Rangers defeating the Pittsburgh Penguins in Game 7 to advance to the second round.
On the surface, it looks like a promising matchup for the Hurricanes, who won won three of their four games against New York this season. The Hurricanes and Rangers also met back in the qualifying round in the 2020 postseason, where Carolina swept New York in three games.
That said, Igor Shesterkin was the best goalie in the NHL this season and the Rangers aren’t short on offense, with the likes of Artemi Panarin and Mika Zibanejad leading the way. The Hurricanes will have home ice advantage – which proved to be a difference-maker in their first round win over the Boston Bruins – and Game 1 will take place on Wednesday.
