The Carolina Hurricanes completed their five-game Western road trip with a win yesterday, defeating the Vancouver Canucks 3-2.
After getting off to a good start where they were generating chances right away, the Hurricanes struck first on a power play, with Andrei Svechikov burying a great cross-ice pass from Martin Necas. The Hurricanes continued to control the period after that and were outshooting Vancouver by a large margin early. It looked like Derek Stepan may have put the Hurricanes up by two a little later as well but the goal was called off for goalie interference – and on a coach’s challenge, the Hurricanes lost and ended up with a penalty.
Then on the ensuing Vancouver power play, Bo Horvat found J.T. Miller in front for a tap-in and just like that, the game was tied. While the Hurricanes outshot Vancouver 15-7 in the frame overall, the score remained 1-1 through 20 minutes.
We saw a more even frame with the second period, and the Hurricanes weren’t generating quite as many quality chances. They still outshot Vancouver 9-6 and really didn’t give the Canucks much to work with offensively, but the game stayed tied heading into the second intermission.
Only a minute into the third period though, Seth Jarvis drove to the net on a partial breakaway and while he was stopped, Sebastian Aho was there to bury the rebound. Then only 37 seconds later, Jesper Fast was able to direct in a hard pass from Jordan Staal off his skate, quickly turning it into a two-goal game. Carolina then went on to dominate most of the third period, outshooting Vancouver 15-3 and while J.T. Miller did get the Canucks back to within a goal partway through the frame, the Hurricanes hung on for a 3-2 win.
Carolina was by far the better team in the win, outshooting Vancouver by a massive 39-16 margin. The win also snaps the Hurricanes’ brief, two-game losing streak, following their back-to-back games this weekend in Alberta. The road trip can certainly still be deemed a success, with Carolina picking up seven of a possible 10 points over their five games.
Andrei Svechnikov continued his excellent start to the year and is now at seven goals and nine points in just six games. Meanwhile, Sebastian Aho has managed nine points as well, while Martin Necas sits at eight points.
It’s pretty hard to complain about Carolina’s start to the season, with a 4-1-1 record, despite playing five of those games on the road. Even in their losses, the Hurricanes have been competitive and look just as we expected them to – as a top team in the East.
The Hurricanes now have a break until Friday, when they face the New York Islanders.
